Η ταινία ακολούθησε τον απόηχο της επιτυχίας του "Νονού", βραβεύτηκε στις Κάννες του 1974 με το χρυσό βραβείο της καλύτερης ταινίας, είχε μια θερμή υποδοχή από την κριτική, αλλά δεν γνώρισε καθόλου εμπορική επιτυχία. Καταγράφει τις προσπάθειες του ειδικού παρακολούθησης Χάρι Κολ (ιδιοφυής ερμηνεία από τον Τζιν Χάκμαν), να αποκρυπτογραφήσει μια αρχικά άκακη συνομιλία ανάμεσα σε δυο εραστές, για λογαριασμό του αινιγματικού πελάτη του, του Προέδρου (ένας απίστευτος Ρόμπερτ Ντιβάλ). Ενώ στην αρχή ο Χάρι Κολ θεωρεί ότι το ζευγάρι διατρέχει θανάσιμο κίνδυνο, στη συνέχεια ανακαλύπτει ότι όχι μόνο δεν απειλείται, αλλά απειλεί και αυτόν τον ίδιο!

Μία υπέροχη ταινία πάνω στο θέμα της κοινωνίας των παρακολουθήσεων, τέλεια αντανάκλαση της γενικής κατάπτωσης και απογοήτευσης που επικράτησε στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '70, ηθελημένα κλειστοφοβική, έντονα υπαρξιστική, ξετυλίγεται σαν ένα καφκικό αριστούργημα. Το συγκλονιστικό φινάλε είναι μία δυνατή γροθιά , καθώς ο Κόλ κάθεται μόνος του στο διαμέρισμα που έχει διαλύσει κυριολεκτικά προσπαθώντας να βρει ένα μικρόφωνο, φυλακισμένος στην τεχνολογία του.
