Την 1η Σεπτέμβρη 1939 η ναζιστική Γερμανία εισβάλει στην Πολωνία αναγκάζοντας έτσι Γαλλία και Μεγάλη Βρετανία & Κτήσεις να της κηρύξουν πόλεμο. Ο Δεύτερος Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος έχει μόλις ξεκινήσει.

Για τον μέσο Αμερικάνο και παρά το νόμο περί εκμίσθωσης και δανεισμού που είχε περάσει από το Κογκρέσο το Φλεβάρη του 1941 ο δεύτερος παγκόσμιος πόλεμος δεν ήταν παρά ένας μακρινός εφιάλτης. Ένας μακρινός εφιάλτης από τον οποίο θα ξυπνήσουν βίαια το Κυριακάτικο πρωινό της 7ης Δεκεμβρίου 1941 μετά την επίθεση της Ιαπωνικής Αυτοκρατορίας στον στόλο το Ειρηνικού για να συρθούν σε μια ακόμα εφιαλτικότερη πραγματικότητα.

Οχτώ μήνες αργότερα, τέσσερις μετά η ναυμαχία στη Θάλασσα των Κοραλίων και τρεις μετά την αποφασιστική νίκη του Αμερικάνικου Ναυτικού στη Ναυμαχία του Μίντγουεϊ, η πρώτη μεραρχία πεζοναυτών αποβιβάστηκε στο Guadalcanal...



Η πολυαναμενόμενη μίνι-σειρά του HBO φιλοδοξεί να καταφέρει ό,τι και ο προκάτοχός της "Band of Brothers": Να μεταφέρει στη μικρή οθόνη την ωμότητα και τη φρίκη του πολέμου αλλά και τον ηρωισμό των ανθρώπων που έλαβαν μέρος σε αυτόν. Χρησιμοποιώντας ως όχημα αφήγησης τις ιστορίες τριών πεζοναυτών φιλοδοξεί να κάνει κάτι πιο περίπλοκο από το "Band of Brothers", αντί να μας αφηγηθεί την ιστορία όπως έχει καταγραφεί από ιστορικούς, αφηγείται την ιστορία όπως αυτή καταγράφηκε από επιζώντες της Μάχης του Ειρηνικού.
