Ο δήμαρχος στην Αμερικάνικη κοινωνία είναι πολύ πολύ σημαντικό πρόσωπο. Ειδικά αν τυγχάνει δήμαρχος μιας από τις μεγαλύτερες πόλεις των ΗΠΑ. Σε μια βιομηχανική πολιτεία όπως το Ιλινόις ο δήμαρχος του Σικάγο είναι ο πιο ισχυρός πολιτικός. Πάνω ακόμα και από τον κυβερνήτη. Πάνω από τους βουλευτές και πάνω από τους Γερουσιαστές.

Δεν είναι απλά ο Δήμαρχος. Είναι ο κομματάρχης, είναι αυτός που χρειάζεσαι να είναι μαζί σου ή τουλάχιστον να μην είναι εναντίον σου αν φιλοδοξείς για καριέρα στην πολιτική.

Ο Kane είναι αυτός ο δήμαρχος. Είναι αυτός ο πολιτικός που έχει συνειδητοποιήσει τη μεγάλη αλήθεια σχετικά με την πολιτική και είναι ο μαριονετίστας που κινεί τα πολιτικά νήματα στο Ιλινόις. Είναι εξαιρετικά ευφυής, είναι αδίστακτος και είναι σκληρός. Είναι ταυτόχρονα πολύ δημοφιλής καθότι ως δήμαρχος είναι φοβερά αποτελεσματικός.

Εκεί στον κολοφώνα της δύναμής του έρχεται μια ανίατη εκφυλιστική ασθένεια να του υπενθυμίσει πως είναι θνητός. Αυτή την ασθένεια πρέπει να την κρατήσει κρυφή, δεν τολμάει να την εκμυστηρευτεί ούτε στους στενούς του συνεργάτες ούτε στην γυναίκα του με την οποία διατηρεί τυπικές και για το θεαθήναι σχέσεις.

Ο άνθρωπος που ανέβηκε στην κορυφή μαθαίνοντας να μην εμπιστεύεται κανέναν και σε τίποτα τώρα πια δεν θα μπορεί να εμπιστευτεί ούτε τον ίδιο του τον εαυτό.

...και οι προκριματικές εκλογές για τον χρίσμα κυβερνήτη του Ιλινόις πλησιάζουν.
